SHAPE was designed to integrate students’ social, emotional, and mental health supports into existing school quality improvement plans, initiatives, and frameworks, such as PBIS & MTSS, and to improve school mental health accountability, excellence, & sustainability.
SHAPE is a free, web-based, interactive system hosted by the Center for School Mental Health and funded in part by the US Department of Health & Human Services.
Indiana is 1 of 13 states currently receiving targeted technical assistance from the Center for School Mental Health for adoption of SHAPE as part of the National Coalition for the State Advancement of School Mental Health.
On the main page of SHAPE you will find examples of the different assessment levels, including the mental health profile and the quality and sustainability assessments: https://theshapesystem.com/. Each one of these can be completed at the school and/or district level.
The School/District Profile provides a snapshot of the structure and operations of your school or district’s comprehensive school mental health system including:
What data you collect and how it is used
What service components your school or district has
What services and supports are provided for students’ concerns
The Quality Assessment focuses on:
Needs assessment and resource mapping
Services & supports
Outcomes & data
The Sustainability Assessment focuses on:
Funding & resources
Documentation & reporting of impact
System marketing & promotion
Once you are in SHAPE you will have access to targeted and easy to use resources compiled and developed by the Center for School Mental Health to help support your school or district as you determine goals and steps you would like to take
The Center for School Mental Health is constantly looking for feedback from the field from across our country to adapt SHAPE to meet the needs. As a result, they have recently added additional tools to SHAPE. These additional resources include:
In order to help support districts as they begin to use SHAPE and create action plans, the Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana School Mental Health Initiative, with guidance from the Center for School Mental Health, will be supporting cohorts by using PDSA process, which stands for Plan, Do, Study, Act. Through this process, we will bring districts together via webinars to share with one another and help guide them in determining goals, action plans, time lines, and how to measure progress.
