This helps us to relate to others, make important life choices, and handle stressful situations. Our mental health plays a part in each stage of our lives. When mental health issues are experienced, it affects our thinking, our mood, and our behaviors. Mental health issues can arise from hereditary factors (brain chemistry), environmental experiences (trauma, abuse, life experiences), or a combination of both.
